Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva 2017

“Reserva de la Familia” (translating to ‘Reserve of the Family’) is one of the world’s greatest sparkling wines, 100% estate, certified organic, always vintage-dated,  and all the more notable because of the quality needed to produce it without dosage.

Vineyard

The grapes are certified organic and hand-harvested from Juvé’s three estates; Espiells, Mediona, and La Cuscona, in the best areas of the Mediterranean Penedès region, close to Barcelona, Spain. Reserva de la Familia is the leading Gran Reserva in the world, a designation that only accounts for 2% of all Cava production. Juvé holds 36% market share of the category.

Winemaking

Harvested by hand, the grapes are gently whole-cluster pressed to retain the delicate vibrancy and freshness. Mostly the first press, consisting of the more delicate flavors and aromas, is used. After the first fermentation by varietal in stainless steel tanks, the classic grapes (Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada) develop malolactic fermentation in order to improve their complexity. After that, the base wines are stabilized, blended and bottled. Following the traditional method, bottles are laid down in the underground caves for an extended period of over three years (36+ months) to develop the complexity that is the distinctive Juve & Camps signature style. No dosage is added after the disgorgement to showcase the fruit of the grapes in its purest form. It carries the ‘Brut Nature’ designation.

Tasting Note

It is an attractive, bright, pale gold sparkling wine, with tiny, abundant bubbles that rise up in streams to form a consistent crown. Deep, intense and elegant, initially evokes notes of ripe white fruits followed by hints of fennel, toast and citrus to complete its distinguished aroma. Its creamy mousse is perfectly integrated in the palate, making its texture in the mouth simultaneously fresh, rounded, and evocative.

Food Pairing

This dry and opulent cuvée closes with an elegant long finish that would enhance a variety of dishes such as rice dishes, cheese, white meat, fish, seafood and Japanese food.

Reviews

"Fine delineation and minerally cut"

Vinous - July 13, 2021

"Pungent, spice-accented aromas of dried pear, lemon pith and toasted nuts; a smoky mineral quality adds lift. Juicy Anjou pear and Meyer lemon flavors show good depth and a floral topnote and become spicier with air. The floral note carries through the clinging finish, which shows fine delineation and minerally cut." - J.R.

"Yellow plum, apple, toast"

Decanter - December 20, 2022

"Xarel·lo, the king of Catalan white grapes, is the backbone of this consistently excellent Cava at 55% of the blend, along with Macabeo (35%) and Parellada (10%). Long ageing (36 months) also plays its part in shaping a family-produced wine that is highly evocative of its place, with subtle garrigue and fennel notes among the yellow plum, apple, toast, lively mousse and fine acidity." - D.W. 12/22

Since it was first made in 1972, Gran Juvé has always been an emblematic cuvée, representing the best of Juvé & Camps. Categorized as 'Brut' with only 5g/l of dosage, it is only produced in exceptional vintages and is made using the best quality grapes from select vineyard plots. With a very long ageing time in the bottle of about 42 months, it showcases the intensity and complexity that Spanish sparkling wine can achieve.
